Pinless Moisture Meter
Non-invasive material checks
For comparing a suspect surface with a known-dry area of the same material while documenting a water stain or moisture concern.
Products for home projects
Klein ET140 and ET150 use different methods. Start with the material and whether small pin marks are acceptable, then interpret the reading within that meter’s instructions.
| Decision | ET140 | ET150 |
|---|---|---|
| Method | Pinless surface scan | Contact pins |
| Surface marks | Non-invasive reading | Pins leave small marks |
| Material modes | Drywall, masonry, hardwood and softwood | Wood and building-material modes |
| Reading interpretation | Drywall/masonry scale is relative, not ambient RH | Building-material readings are not ambient RH |
| Useful role | Compare areas of the same material against a known-dry reference | Take a localized contact reading where marks are acceptable |
A number becomes more useful when the meter mode, material and reference area are recorded. Do not compare a relative masonry scale with a percentage shown for wood or a room humidity sensor.
A meter can help document a pattern. It cannot establish the source of a leak, prove that an entire wall is dry or diagnose mold. Follow the tool instructions around wiring and unknown materials.

Localized pin readings
For localized contact readings where small pin marks are acceptable and the material matches a supported meter mode.
