Squeaky floors are usually friction noises. The subfloor can move against a joist, a nail can rub in its hole, two boards can rub together, or finished flooring can move over the layer below.
The easiest repair is from an unfinished basement or crawl space because you can see the joists and subfloor directly. Repairs from above are still possible, but the fastener location and finished flooring determine which technique is safe.
Find the exact spot that moves, then tighten that connection. From below, that can mean fastening the subfloor to the joist or carefully shimming a gap. From above, specialized breakaway screws or concealed fasteners can pull the floor tight. If the floor feels soft, bouncy or visibly sagged, diagnose the structure before treating it as a simple squeak.
