Virginia licensing guide
In Virginia, “handyman” is not a license that overrides the electrical trade. State law defines electrical work for the public as regulated tradesman work, and DPOR licenses individual electrical tradesmen.
Virginia’s building code does exempt some like-for-like residential replacements, such as certain switches, receptacles, luminaires and ceiling fans, from a permit application. That exemption is about the permit. It does not turn regulated electrical work into unlicensed handyman work.
